In spite of back up your workbooks faithfully, still
corruption can create a problem. The backup files will not always provide you
the most recent work, perhaps you will end up re-entering data. It is a better
option to repair a corrupted workbook. If you try to open a corrupted workbook
then excel will connect you to File Recovery mode that can try to repair the
workbook. It’s good if it really works otherwise you will definitely need
alternatives. Always try the easiest way to repair a corrupted workbook.
1. Disable automatic calculation
While using Open
And Repair option, if Excel fails to open the file then try to set the
calculation method to manual method. Follow the steps to rest the calculation
setting:
i.
Open a blank workbook.
ii.
Choose Option and click the Calculation
tab from the Tools menu. In Excel
2007, click the Office button, click
Excel Options, and then select Formulas in the panel to the left.
iii.
Click Manual in the Calculation
section.
iv.
Click OK.
After performing these steps, try to open the
corrupted workbook.
2. Open the corrupted workbook in WordPad or Word
If you are unable to repair the workbook then try to
open it in WordPad. If it is able to open then WordPad will convert everything
to text. Unfortunately, this method will not recover formulas. WordPad will
recover your VBA procedures unlike many other data recovery methods.
There is a chance when you able to open a corrupted
.xls file in Word but very limited results will be displayed. You have to
install Microsoft Office Excel converter in order to let this method work. Word
will not be able to recover your procedures unlike WordPad.
3. Move the File
Most of the time it happens that a corrupted workbook does not really corrupts in the usual sense. Networks and servers mark them as corrupted files as it is no more accessible. If you come across an apparently corrupted workbook which Excel can’t repair then move the corrupted file to another folder, server or drive.
